Daily Mail best websites of the year 2009

Daily Mail, December 23, 2009

By Fred Mawer

Over the past year, I've reviewed 46 travel-oriented websites for this Website of the Week slot. Here are the ten that stood out the most, and the reasons why.

Most comprehensive: snowcarbon.co.uk. If you want to get to a ski resort by train, I can't imagine there is anything you could possibly need to know that isn't covered on this beautifully constructed website.

A new website launched today promises to lure skiers and snowboarders off planes and on to trains. Snowcarbon lists 30 of the most convenient European resorts to reach by train and provides step-by-step guides to timetables, transfers and booking.

The site also features warts and all resort guides written by specialist ski journalists, as well as comparison information on the carbon footprint of reaching each resort by rail and air.

Trains are probably the safest way to travel and a new service called snowcarbon.co.uk is due to launch next week, which can help with planning your train journey to winter snow. There are few better experiences in snow holidays than getting on the Eurostar at St Pancras and getting off eight hours later at the heart of the Paradiski region of La Plagne and les Arcs in France, with many other resorts such as Tignes, Val d'Isère, Courchevel and Meribel nearby or accessed from other stations en route.

Also coming soon is Snowcarbon, which is aimed at skiers and snowboarders who want to reduce their carbon footprint by taking the train. The site will offer guides to resorts that are easy to access by rail. It has been launched by journalist Daniel Elkan who has written for many newspapers and magazines on skiing.

Elkan says: “As flying becomes increasingly unpleasant, and rail infrastructure across Europe improves, the advantages of rail travel to ski resorts are growing. Journeys are fast, stress-free and trains are punctual. In many cases, it is possible to take a train directly into a resort.”

snowcarbon in ski times

Travel Trade Gazette, October 28, 2009

Snowcarbon claims to be the first website to offer a single source of information for all aspects of rail travel to European ski resorts. It aims to encourage winter sports enthusiasts to take low-carbon train journeys instead of flying.

Snowcarbon said a journey from London to Sauze d’Oulx in Italy would create 11.1 kilogrammes per person by train compared with 98.8kg by flying. The site, at snowcarbon.co.uk, features 30 resorts in destinations such as France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Andorra that are accessible by rail.
