The Acla Clavadatsch (00 41 81 833 07 07) is a converted cowshed. The Arturo (00 41 81 833 66 85) in Celerina, which dates back to 1583, specialises in fondue and raclette. The Dorta (00 41 81 854 20 40) in Zuoz is described as “the most unusual locale in the Engadin Valley” - one of the oldest buildings in the Engadin that serves home made local specialities such as hay soup, Alpine honey parfait with red bilberries, and sweet pancakes.
By way of a refreshing contrast to the many fine dining experiences in St. Moritz, La Baracca (00 41 79 270 07 75) offers “simple cooking and construction worker romantic – polenta instead of sushi, scaffolding instead of plush and silk, improvisation instead of perfection.”
But the restaurant’s minimalist culture does run to a telephone: 00 41 79 270 07 75.
The Berghaus Diavolezza, (00 41 81 839 39 00) at almost 3,000m, has a sun terrace with wonderful views of the glacier. The Berghaus Fuorcla Surlej (00 41 81 842 63 03) at 2,755m has breathtaking views of the Bernina peaks. The Bergrestaurant Hahnensee (00 41 81 833 36 34) at 2,153m is a popular après-ski haunt.
It’s always fun to start on the terrace at Hanselmann, (00 41 81 833 38 64) the famous coffee house, for gooey cakes and people watching. Try the atmospheric bar at the Kulm Hotel (00 41 81 836 80 00) where you can see glass showcases packed with Cresta Run trophies in the corridor. The Devil's Place (00 41 81 836 60 00) has 2,500 varieties of whisky, said to be the widest range in the world.
