In the town

Pas de la Casa and Soldeu have the liveliest atmospheres – although not on the scale of major Austrian resorts.

In Grandvalira the partying is pretty well reserved for the bars in the villages, with little in the way of music and drinking at the foot of the slopes. Maybe an umbrella bar or two would not go amiss.

In Soldeu, Fat Albert's is popular, and often has live music. Other venues include The Villager, the Aspen, Avalanche, and the Piccadilly.

Fat Albert's (00 376 851 765), British run, does decent steaks and burgers, while Borda del Rector (00 376 852 606) is one of the places to go for Andorran cuisine.

Pas de la Casa can have a slightly more raucous feel, with a strong line-up of après-ski venues including Paddy’s, Milwaukee, Bilbord, Condor, Mambo, Havana and Mexicano.

To dine, we like Chez Paulo (00 376 855 322), very French, as well as Cal Padri (00 376 855 310) and KSB (00 376 856 225).

El Tarter and Canillo are fairly quiet at night, and Encamp has some unpretentious bars patronised by locals. In Grau Roig  you can wine and dine splendidly at the Grau Roig hotel (00 376 75 55 56).

Mountain restaurants

There are a handful worth a visit, including the cosy Rifugi del Llacs del Pessons (00 376 759 015), with table service, above Grau Roig. Pi de Migdia (00 376 890 500) at the top of the El Tarter gondola has table service and a laid-back atmosphere, as does Gall de Bosc (00 376 890 607) at Espiolets.
