Restaurants in town
Il Mercato (00 41 33 854 88 88) at the Hotel Spinne is good for salads, pizzas, pastas and risottos. The Challi-Stube at the Hotel Kreuz & Post (00 41 33 854 54 92) in a converted 18th-century farmhouse serves both Swiss and international cuisine.
If you want to splash out, try the La Pendule d'Or (men must wear jackets) or Jägerstube at the Grand Hotel Regina, where you can choose from such exotic fare as poached eel with crayfish and scampi flambéed with Chivas Regal.
Mountain restaurants
Between them, Grindelwald and Wengen have almost 30 mountain restaurants. There are a number of lunch and après-ski opportunities at Kleine Scheidegg. The big restaurant there is the Restaurant Bahnhof (00 41 33 828 78 28), which is great for rösti, and käse schnitte (grilled cheese on toast dipped in wine).
There’s another big restaurant at the Männlichen (00 4133 853 10 68) at the Männlichen top station
Brandegg (1,330m) – just above Grindelwald – is one of the more popular pit-stops for skiers to take lunch and tea breaks, and the Bergrestaurant Brandegg (00 41 33 853 10 57) is a popular haunt, also catering for night skiers and tobogganers.
The Waldspitz (00 41 33 853 18 61) can only be reached by skiing off piste from Oberjoch (2,486m) or by toboggan but it’s worth it for the magnificent views of the Wetterhorn, Eiger, and the Schilthorn across the valley at Mürren.
Après-ski and nightlife
The Spycher Snow Bar at the Berggasthaus Männlichen (00 41 33 853 10 68) has awe-inspiring views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau from its sundeck and is a popular haunt at the end of the day. Try the barbecued sausages and home-made soup.
Later, down in the town, the romantic and rustic Cava Bar, in the cellar of Hotel Derby (00 41 33 854 54 61) near the railway station, is a popular haunt and serves fondue – sometimes accompanied by a live band. The Disco Mescalero at the Hotel Spinne, Challi-Bar at the Hotel Kreuz & Post and Plaza Club at the Hotel Sunstar offer lots of danceable music.
