You might not have heard of Les Contamines, and if you haven’t, this resort is well worth discovering. There are some fantastic, varied slopes, stunning scenery and one of the friendliest, most unpretentious villages in the Alps.

What makes the resort is remarkable is how quiet the slopes are.  When we visited at February half term and were amazed at being able to ski on uncrowded pistes that in many sectors were almost empty. It really was incredible.

In total, there are 132km of slopes, of a variety that would suit any group of skiers, and the lack of crowds makes this not only a wonderful place to learn but a great place for experienced skiers to enjoy too.

What is more, the scenery from any point on the slopes is magnificent.  Much of the ski area faces onto an unparalleled view of Mont Blanc, while in the other direction Hauteluce, and you ski with a magnificent a vista into the valley.

Highlights

  • Varied terrain to suit all levels, with long, interesting runs in stunning scenery
  • Incredibly quiet slopes – even at peak dates
  • Good lift system and resort layout
  • The snow record is excellent, due to its microclimate
  • Very good value for money
  • The village is friendly, authentic and unpretentious

Lowlights

  • There’s barely any nightlife in the village – but that could be a plus point for families
  • Very little ski-in-ski-out accommodation (but good shuttle links)
  • More trees in some parts of the ski area would help on cloudy days
  • The resort doesn’t yet have any 4* or 5* hotels for those that want more luxury

Snowcarbon Founder, Daniel has made a two-minute film about Les Contamines, interviewing British skiers found at random on the slopes, to ask what they think about the resort, which you can see here:

The tourist office also has a film showing highlights of the resort - and there are many!
Here it is:
