Mürren is a genuinely historic resort perched high at 1,650m on a sunny terrace with commanding views of three iconic Swiss peaks, the Jungfrau, the Mönch and the Eiger.

Mürren is close to the neighbouring resorts of Wengen and Grindelwald, separated by the steep-sided Lauterbrunnen Valley. However, the three resorts are complementary, and are linked by mountain railway.

Like Grindelwald across the valley, Mürren is a car-free village. It is easily reached by train, or by cable car from Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg.

Mürren has only 420 inhabitants but can provide 2,000 beds in 11 hotels and about 150 holiday apartments for the aficionados who tend to return year after year because of the resort’s unique history, ambience and genuinely breathtaking scenery.

And, of course, it’s skiing including the renowned Schilthorn descent and extensive off-piste opportunities.

It was here, in 1922, that Arnold Lunn set the first modern slalom, to be judged purely on speed and not style. Two years later he formed the celebrated Kandahar Ski Club, and the first Inferno Race – said to be the longest downhill amateur ski race in the world, from the Schilthorn down to Lauterbrunnen – was first held in 1928.
