Photo: Leogang Saalbach-Hinterglemm Tourism The fabulous ski network embraced by the villages of Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Leogang is an unusual but enticing mix of Austrian charm and French-style convenience. Few other Austrian resorts have such an array of virtual ski-in ski-out accommodation.
Nearby is the town of Saalfelden, steeped in mountain tradition and offering a cheaper alternative to stay, but only minutes away from the slopes by skibus. Saalfelden has its own small ski area – plus it is at the centre of an extensive cross-country ski network.
Although Saalbach and Hinterglemm are joined at the hip in skiing and marketing terms, the villages have quite separate characters – as of course does Leogang, a mountain away and ideal for those who want a quieter choice altogether.
This only adds to the appeal. Saalbach - the arrival point for most trains - is more archetypal Austrian, with traditional-style buildings huddled around an onion-domed church. But, unlike most old Austrian villages, the ski lifts are right on the doorstep.
Hinterglemm is just as skier-friendly but has a slightly more functional feel and accommodation prices tend to be a little lower. The runs are linked, via the Klein Asitz area, to the little resort of Leogang, which is a much quieter – and also cheaper. Leogang is in a valley parallel to Saalbach-Hinterglemm and reached via Saalfelden, which also has a range of hotels.
