For many British skiers, Wengen is an iconic home-from-home and they rarely want to ski anywhere else. The skiing is not too challenging, with plenty of long, tree-lined slopes for all the family, and the resort is car-free except for electric carts and a few taxis.

Wengen is ideally placed at the centre of the Jungfrau region enabling you to strike out in one direction for Grindelwald (by rail, or on skis, using the Männlichen cable car) and in the other (by rail) back to Lauterbrunnen and from there to explore Mürren, on the other side of the valley.

The railways came to this part of the world early - work started at the end of the 19th century, although building the region's pièce de résistance, the Jungfraubahn, dragged on for more than 16 years.

Today all three resorts are covered by the same Jungfrau regional lift-pass, although you can get passes that just cover Grindelwald/Wengen and a separate one for Mürren.

Grindelwald has more of the skiing than Wengen, but depending on the slope you're on, the entire ski area offers a ringside view of three of the famous peaks in Switzerland: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
