Mountain restaurants

The Glocknerhaus (00 43 6542 73179), half way up the Areitbahn route to the top of  Schmittenhöhe, is about 125 years old and was once visited by the Emperor Franz Joseph. The Schmiedhofalm (00 43 6542 72868) is in a fairly quiet spot at Schmitten so tends not to get too crowded.

On the Kitzsteinhorn, the Gletschermühle (00 43 6547 8621 371) and the Krefelderhütte (00 43 6547 7780), close to the Alpincenter, are popular, as is the Häuslalm (00 43 6547 7024) at the mid-stations of the lifts up to the glacier. The Bella Vista, at the top of the Gipfelbahn (3,029m), has superb views.

Restaurants in town

The lakeside town is a good place for eating fish. Zum Cäsar (Italian and Greek cuisine: 00 43 6542 47257) in the Schlossplatz (castle square) offers fish from the lake and the sea.

Carnivores might prefer the Köhlergraben (00 43 6542 72095) in Schmittental with its “cowboy-steaks”. The Kupferkessel (Copper Kettle) - 00 43 6542 72768 – is good for pizzas.

Après-ski and nightlife

There’s a huge variety of options. The Schnaps Hans Ice Bar at the top of the mountain is where it all starts. Later on, take your pick from a huge selection of pubs, clubs, bars and discos. The Crazy Daisy (00 43 6542 72526) is near the Grand Hotel in Seegasse.

In Kaprun, the Kitsch & Bitter (00 43 6547 8663) has cocktails and live music. The Charly Chaplin bar is in the station square (00 43 664 5285347).

The ancient Romantik Hotel Zum Metzgerwirt (00 43 6542 72520), offers a “Passion Menu”. In Kaprun, The Baum-Bar (00 43 6547 8216) has a restaurant and disco. The Zirbenstube is at the 4-star Hotel Orgler (00 43 6547 8205).
