Ski highlights for all levels
Beginners: good nursery slopes at the Schmittental base and Schüttdorf. There are easy slopes higher up at Areitalm and at Breiteckalm
Intermediate: just about the whole of Schmittenhohe is excellent for intermediates, although some runs can be a little daunting for more timid skiers.
The Schüttabfahrt is a beautiful 6.2km run from the top of the Schmittenhöhe back to Areit-Base-Station (vertical drop: 1,250m). The Maiskogel at Kaprun’s glacier is a thigh-burning 7km run (vertical drop: 960m).
Expert: the World Cup downhill is quite a challenge, but there’s not too much here for experts except steepness and some good gladed skiing. The Trassabfahrt is a challenging black run almost 4km long, with a vertical drop of 1,000m.
Off-piste
There is a fair amount of off-piste, particularly in the trees but off-piste skiing in general is discouraged in most places because of environmental concerns.

Lift system
Zell am See has built up a strong selection of big lifts to get the skiing masses onto its one major peak, the Schmittenhohe.
These include the Zeller Bergbahn “cityxpress” from the town centre; the Schmittenhöhebahn cable car from Schmittental; the new 8-person TrassXpress gondola, and, in the other direction, the Areitbahn. On Kaprun’s glacier, a 6-seat chair pack was recently added.
Snow reliability and snowmaking
Zell has worked hard to extend snowmaking and almost three quarters of the slopes are now covered by snowmaking equipment. In a poor snow year, Kaprun’s glacier is a fine alternative.
Terrain park
There’s a permanent halfpipe at Glocknerwiese on the Schmittenhöhe and a Rodeo Funpark. There are 3 Snow parks on the Kitzsteinhorn, 1 Funpark on the Schaufelberg – Maiskogel.
