The Metro (involves stairs)
photo:Daniel Elkan A sign for the MetroThe Metro isn't recommended for Paris-Nord to Paris-Austerlitz because the platforms are only accessed by stairs. Sure, if you are feeling fit and don't mind lifting your luggage up and down them then it isn't difficult. But we would recommend taking a taxi instead. The Metro journey between Paris-Nord and Paris-Austerlitz takes 20 minutes, with trains running every six minutes. A ticket costs about 2€, and you can save time by buying a carnet of 10 from a Eurostar or TGV cafe-bar. Allow 50 minutes for the transfer in total.
Take Metro Line 5 towards Place d'Italie (get off at Gare d’Austerlitz)
But we wouldn't recommend this way of transferring if you have heavy cases, because you have to go up and down a set of stairs with about 15 steps, at least twice.
The ticket entry gates on the Metro can be a bit narrow to enter with a wide suitcase. Look for the wide-entry gate, which has a button that you press for it to open.
